Counselling in Cottingham
Psychotherapy, counselling and coaching from my home therapy room on South Street - in the heart of the village.
I’m Chris Colcomb, a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, and I’ve been working with clients from my therapy room at 29 South Street, Cottingham for 5 years. If you’re searching for a counsellor in Cottingham, you won’t need to travel into Hull or out to another town - I’m based here, a short walk from the village centre and Cottingham railway station, with on-street parking nearby.
Who I work with
People come to me from across Cottingham, Willerby, Kirk Ella, Skidby, Beverley and west Hull - and from the University of Hull, which sits just down the road. My clients include professionals managing stress and burnout, students navigating anxiety and life transitions, couples and individuals working through relationship difficulties, and people facing midlife shifts, grief, or the long shadow of childhood experiences.
What I can help with
Stress and anxiety. Persistent worry, overwhelm, panic, and the physical toll of carrying too much for too long. Together we work out what’s driving it and what needs to change.
Depression and hopelessness. Low mood, loss of motivation, intrusive thoughts, or feelings of pointlessness. Therapy offers a place to be honest about how bad it feels - and a way through.
Relationships. Conflict, communication breakdown, repeating patterns, separation and divorce. I help you understand what’s happening between you and others, and what you bring to it.
Grief and loss. Bereavement, but also the quieter losses - of health, roles, relationships, or the future you expected.
Childhood trauma and shame. Early experiences shape how we relate, cope and see ourselves. As a Transactional Analysis psychotherapist, this depth work is at the centre of my practice.
Life changes and midlife shifts. Career change, empty nest, retirement, identity questions, feeling stuck in a rut and wanting something different.
I also work with addictions, self-esteem, sexuality and gender questions, suicidal feelings and self-harm. If what’s troubling you isn’t listed here, get in touch anyway - the free initial conversation is exactly for working out whether I can help.
How I work
I’m an Integrative and Transactional Analysis psychotherapist, which means I draw on a range of approaches rather than fitting you into one method. My priority is building a strong, safe and supportive relationship with you first — the research is consistent that this relationship is what makes therapy work. From there, we do the kind of talking that works for you. That’s where the name comes from: Talking Works.
Sessions in Cottingham, outdoors, or online
Most clients see me in person at my therapy room at 29 South Street, Cottingham, HU16 4AH. If sitting face-to-face doesn’t feel right, I also offer walk-and-talk therapy - sessions on the move in the green spaces around Cottingham and the East Riding. And if you’d prefer to talk from home, I work online via Zoom.
